bourbon barrel aged rotbier with brettanomyces

A smooth Rotbier with caramel and chocolate notes and Brettanomyces on the finish.

  • The “rot” in Rotbier is simply the german word for ‘red’.

Rotbier originates in Nuremberg where breweries follow local regulations for this red beer similar to the Bavarian purity law for beer. Since 1303, Nuremberg breweries may only use barley malt for their beer.

The Bavarian purity law aka The Reinheitsgebot (literally “purity order” in German) is a series of regulations limiting the ingredients in beer in Germany. According to the 1516 Bavarian law, the only ingredients that could be used in the production of beer were water, barley and hops.
