january 2023

We’re kicking off 2023 with a roundup of our national award-winning beers.

Nonsuch is our love letter to Manitoba and although our true purpose, at the heart of this company, is to help make special moments, we can’t deny it feels pretty good to know judges from across our country have enjoyed our beers too.

old ale x

An award-winning rich and dark delicacy best enjoyed with stinky cheeses and crackling fires

ABV – 10%
Ideal Temp – 7-9ºC

Glass – Snifter
Vegan – Yes

  • Story

    What’s the X in Old Ale X for?⁣

Nine years ago, our head brewer Mark brewed the first batch of this beer in honour of the birth of his youngest son Alexander – hence the name Ale X (Alex).⁣

⁣From that initial batch, Mark set aside a bottle in his cellar as a gift to Alexander on his 18th birthday, (assuming Mark has the willpower to keep it corked.)⁣

⁣The second reason for the X is the 10% ABV Mark designed into the recipe, allowing the beer to be cellared (similar to wine). Old Ale X is designed to evolve in flavour and appreciate over time in your cellar (up to seven years and counting).

We also add live yeast and fermentable sugars into the bottles right before packaging, a process known as bottle conditioning which removes air from the inside of the bottle as the yeast consumes the sugars and produce carbon dioxide.⁣

⁣Start your own story and pick up a bottle.

la molière craft pilsner

A classic crowd-pleaser.

  • ABV – 4.8%
    Ideal Temp – 6-8ºC
    Glass – Pilsner
    Vegan – Yes

Why is this a ‘craft’ pilsner?

The newest supporting cast member of this pilsner is Perle hops, which deliver a subtle but moving floral and spicy performance alongside a cleaner bitterness. To help bring down the house, we've also brought down the ABV to 4.8% so you can enjoy multiple encores. We're confident fans of the original will applaud this new version which retains its signature full body.

belgian strong

An award-winning sweet and savoury ale best enjoyed with sausages, roasted root veggies, and beef.

ABV – 8%
Ideal Temp – 7-9ºC

Glass – Snifter
Vegan – Yes

  • Profile

This full-bodied ale features a deep copper/amber appearance below a modest light tan head. Expect caramel, and toast aromas with fruit esters on the nose. A rich mouthfeel delivers a medley of caramel and light sweetness on the palate before a drying finish.

    About this Style

Belgian Strong is more of a catchall category rather than a specific style of beer with a detailed history. Although many strong, darker beers have been documented, there is no clear lineage from these older brews to today’s Belgian Strong. Most versions are unique in character reflecting characteristics of individual breweries, produced in limited quantities, and often highly sought-after.

    Our Story
How do you honour the place that anchors you as often as it moves you? What does it mean to love home? For us, it means drawing inspiration from its natural beauty, harvesting authentic local ingredients, and crafting them into a taste of home. Prairie Common is proudly brewed with Two-row, Crystal, and Munich malts from the prairies as wellas Chinook and Nugget hops from local producer Prairie Mountain Hops. Prairie Common isn’t one of our ‘latest’ releases, but it certainly is one of our greatest – we hope you enjoy this fresh batch.

    Profile
This amber-coloured lager opens with toast, caramel, and pine aromas on the nose. Enjoy a harmonious, balanced blend of bready, malty notes and hop flavours with a smooth, bitter finish.

    Food Pairing
    Burgers, beef pies, pub food.

    Award-Winning
At the heart of our mission is an ambition to make Manitoba proud, so we were honoured in 2021 when Prairie Common was awarded the silver medal in the Amber Lager category at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

berliner weisse

A hopless, German wheat ale with sour lemonade notes and brettanomyces.

  • If you enjoy this bottle, we highly encourage you to stop by our taproom and try it with added syrup (summer months only).

This seemingly strange tradition originated in the late 19th century when German drinkers began to find their beloved Berliner Weisse a touch too tart. To soften the acidity in these wheat ales, they added sweeteners.

Originally, they favoured kümmel (a caraway-based liqueur) or Korn aka Kornbrand or Kornbranntwein (a colourless, distilled beverage produced from fermented cereal grain seed.) Over time, German bar staff began making their own syrups in-house.

Today, some of the most popular sweeteners are the green-tinged woodruff (waldmeister) syrup, based on the sweet-scented bedstraw plant, and a pink raspberry syrup known as himbeersaft.

Our team has prepared three syrups of our own for you to add to your pint of Berliner Weisse.

    • Strawberry Basil
    • Pear Apple Lychee
    • Bergamot Tea
